Girl-Groups der 60er Jahre, die Beach Boys und der frühe Punk Rock der Ramones hatten einen großen Einfluss auf den einzigartigen Sound von SHONEN KNIFE, welcher der Band schnell den Ruf als Japans weibliche Antwort auf The Ramones einbrachte. 1991 entdeckte kein Geringerer als Kurt Cobain von Nirvana die Band für sich bei einem Konzert in L.A. und äußerte sich danach mehr als begeistert: „When I finally got to see them live, I was transformed into a hysterical nine-year-old-girl at a Beatles concert.“ Er setzte damit als berühmtester Fan den Startschuss für eine gute Zusammenarbeit. Nirvana bestätigen SHONEN KNIFE als support für ihre England Tour zum Erfolgsalbum Nevermind, während der Cobain sogar den Song „Twist Barbie“ der beiden Schwestern Naoko Yamano und Atsuko Yamano live coverte.
